2.1 responding to change Flashcards
How do humans know what is going on in their environment?
The nervous system has receptors to detect stimuli
Where are receptors found? Give the general name and 5 specific ones.
In the sense organs, eye, ear, nose tongue and skin
Give examples of types of stimmuli
Light, sound, chemicals, temperature, touch and pain
What coordinates responses to stimuli?
The brain
What system are the brain and the spinal cord part of?
The central nervous system (CNS)
What makes up the central nervous system (CNS)
The brain and the spinal cord
What are neurons? what do they carry?
Nerve cells which are found in nerves. They carry electrical impulses
What are the two types of neuron and what do they do?
Sensory neurons carry impulses from the receptors to the CNS
Motor neurons carry impulses from the CNS to the effector organs.
What are effector organs? What do they do if they are stimulated?
Muscles respond by contracting
Glands respond by secreting (releasing) chemicals.
How do impulses pass from the receptor to the CNS?
An electrical impulse along a sensory neuron
