5.1 Pyramids of biomas Flashcards
What is the biomass
The dry mass of living material in plants and animals
What is a pyramid of biomass
the mass of the organisms at each stage in a food chain. Each stage in a food chain is less than at the previous stage.
Why is the pyramid of biomass more accurate than a pyramid of numbers (that is the number of individuals in each level)
Organisms vary greatly in size, many thousands of organisms might feed on only one tree, If you just looked at the number of organisms in a species you might think that the bush was at the top as there is only one of it, but looking at the mass you can see that the mass of the bush is much greater than the combined mass of all the insects
How do you turn a food chain into a pyramid of biomass?
Each step up is the next stage in the food chain
What are the (usually 4) levels in a pyramid of biomass
Plants (producers)
Primary consumer (herbivore)
Secondary consumer (carnivore )
Tertiary consumer (carnivor)
