6.2 Types of reproduction Flashcards
What is asexual reproduction 3
Does not involve the fusion of gametes (sex cells)
All genetic information comes from one parent
All offspring genetically identical to parent, very little variety
What is sexual reproduction
involves the fusion of sex cells (gametes)
The is much variety as there is a mix of genetic material
In animals what are the two sex cells called
Eggs and sperm
In asexual reproduction what are the offspring called
clones, they are identical to the parent.
Can offspring produced by sexual reproduction ever be identical to the parents
No as they have a mix of genes from the two parents.
Why is the random mixing of genes important to survival
Some variation may give the offspring a better chance of survival and they will therefore be more likely to reproduce.
