7.3 Measuring The Process Flashcards
What is a peak flow meter?
Device that measures the rate at which air can be expelled from the lungs
What are vitalographs?
More complex version of peak flow meter
Patient breathes out as quickly as they can and a graph is produced of the amount of air they breathe out and how quickly it is breathed out
What is tidal volume?
Volume of air that moves into and out of the lungs with each resting breath
Typical tidal volume
500cm3
What is vital capacity?
Volume of air that can be breathed in when the strongest possible exhalation is followed by the deepest possible intake of breath
What is inspiratory reserve volume?
Maximum volume of air you can breathe in over and above a normal inhalation
What is expiratory reserve volume?
Extra amount of air that you can force out of your lungs over and above the normal tidal volume of air you breathe out
What is residual volume?
Volume of air left in the lungs when you have exhaled as hard as possible - cannot be measured directly
What is the function of soda lime?
Remove carbon dioxide produced
What is total lung capacity?
Sum of vital capacity and residual volume
What is the breathing rate?
Number of breaths taken per minute
What is the ventilation rate?
Volume of air inhaled per minute
Formula for ventilation rate
Tidal volume x breathing rate
What happens during exercise?
Tidal volume can increase
Breathing rate can increase
Ventilation and oxygen uptake of lungs increase during gas exchange to meet demands of tissues
