7.1 skin system Flashcards
1
Q
Outline the functions of the skin (regulation of body temp)
A
- evaporative cooling
- increase blood flow to the skin
- increase sweat
evaporation of sweat cools the skin which decreases body temp
2
Q
Protection & Immunity
A
- protects underlying tissues against impact, abrasion, fluid loss, and harmful chemicals
- physical barrier to pathogens
- surface of the skin has an acidic pH to prevent bacteria from reproducing
- special cells produce a pigment called melanin in the basal layer of the epidermis to prevent UV damage
- sensory nerve endings in the skin can detect pain and trigger reflex actions
3
Q
Sensation
A
- detection of touch, pain, and temperature
- info passed to nervous system
- different receptors are found in different levels of the skin, firing impulsions to communicate with the rest of the nervous system
4
Q
Secretion
A
- salts, water, and organic wastes by glands
5
Q
Vitamin D synthesis
A
- when exposed to sunlight, epidermal cells convert a chemical in the sebum into vitamin D
6
Q
wut is the importance of vitamin D?
A
important in absorption of calcium which promotes bone growth and muscle contraction
7
Q
know the diagram of the skin
A
IT WONT LET ME PUT A PIC IN
8
Q
Epidermis
A
-top layer
-no direct blood supply or nerve ending
-provides protection
-skin color
9
Q
Dermis
A
- middle layer
- contains nerve endings, hair follicles, sweat glands, capillaries-blood vessels
10
Q
Fat cells (subcutaneous tissue)
A
- below the dermis
- provides protection and insulation
- larger blood vessels
11
Q
Sebaceous gland
A
- secretes SEBUM, oily matter that keeps skin from getting dry and water proofs the hair in mammals
12
Q
Sweat gland
A
- thermoregulations
- secretes sweat
13
Q
Hair follicle
A
- hair is embedded in the skin
- base contains living cells that divide
- hair is attached to muscle (arrector pili muscle)
14
Q
increase body temp
A
- vasodilation
- body hairs lie flat
- sweat
15
Q
decrease body temp
A
- vasoconstriction
- body hairs stand on end
- shiver
