6.5.6: Gas chromatography Flashcards
Gas chromatography use
Separates mixtures of volatile liquids so they can be identified
The stationary phase
A solid/ a solid coated by a viscous liquid eg: oil, packed into a long column. The column is coiled and built into an oven.
The mobile phase
An unreactive gas carrier eg: nitrogen.
The sample is vaporised then passed through the oven.
Retention time
From when each component is injected into the column to being recorded at the other end.
Under standard conditions each substance will…
Have a unique retention time.
GC-MS
Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry
GC-MS use
To identify each component and what the original sample consisted of
Positive of method if GC-MS instead of GC
Positively identify separate components which can’t done from a chromatogram
GC-MS process overview
Sample is separated using gas chromatography then the separated components are fed into a mass spectrometer which produces a mass spectrum for each component.
