6 - The Pelvis and Urinary System 2 Flashcards
What 3 bones are the bony pelvis made up of?
The ileum, the ishium and the pubis
What do the 3 fused bones come together to form?
The acetabulum
What does the pubic synthesis articulate with in the anterior?
The midline
What are the 2 types of pelvis?
The greater (false) & The lesser (true)
Where does the lesser pelvis lie?
Between the pelvis inlet and the pelvic outlet
What does the lesser pelvis consist of ?
The pelvic surfaces of hip bones, sacrum and coccyx.
What is contained within the lesser pelvis?
- The pelvic colon
- Rectum
- Urethra
- Bladder
- Sex and reproductive organs
- External genetalia enclosed by
peritoneum
Where do the testes lie?
Within the scrotum
What are the 2 muscles in the testes?
The dartos and The cremaster
What do the 2 muslces in the testes do?
Help to regulate the temperature for production and micturition.
What is the ideal body temp for the testes?
2-4 degrees below core temperature.
How does the cremater help to regulate the temperature of the testes?
- In colder temeratures it contracts and brings the testes closer to the body, increasing the temperature.
- In warmer temperatures it relaxes to move the testes away from the body.
What is the cremaster a continuation of ?
The external obliques
What are the 2 connective tissue layers?
Tunica Vanginalis - double layered tissue
Tunica Albuginea - white, thick, dense layer invaginates into the testes separatig the lobules.
What are the functions of testes?
- To produces androgens, mainly testosterone.
- To produce sperm via spermatogenesis.
What are the testes controlled by?
The Anterior Pituitary gland
What are the lobules further broken down into?
The seminiferous tubules
What do the seminiferous tubules contain?
- The spermatogenic cells
- Leydig cells
- Sertoli cells (Which form the bloood testes barrier)
What is the function of the blood testes barrier?
Prevents the immune system from attacking sperm cells.
How long doe sthe sperm take in the epididymus before moving to the tail.
12 days
What happens to the sperm in the testicular fluid?
Gains mobility
Where is sperm stored till ejaculation?
In the Epididymus
What is the tail of the epididymus continous with?
The Vas Deferens
What ducts pass through the inguinal canal?
the vas deferens and the spermatic cord
What is the widening of the vas deferens known as ?
The Ampulla
What lies lateral to the vas deferens?
The seminal vesicle/gland
What does the seminal gland do?
Create and secrets seminal fluid which makes up 60% of the ejaculate.
What does the seminal fluid contain?
Fructose, used by the mitochondria to produce energy.
What fluid does the prostate produce for the ejaculate?
A milky alkaline fluid that produces a coagulant and decoagulant effect.
What fluid does the bulbourethral gland produce for the ejaculate?
A salty. thick secretion that acts as a lubricant (pre-ejaculate)
What are the 2 tissues that make up the penis?
Corpus cavernosa and corpus spongiosum
What innervation is needed for am errection?
Parasympathetic
What innervation is needed for ejaculation?
Sympathetic
What is the vagina?
A muscular tube continuous with the external vagainal oriface.
What are the 3 layers of the uterus?
The Perimetrium, The Myometrium, The Endometrium.
What lies lateral and superiorly to the uterus?
The fallopian tube.
