peptoniphilus
anaerobic bacteria
commensal flora
requires special equipment to culture
when to investigate anaerobic bacteria
presence on clinical. specimens not always significant
anaerobic bacteria found in normally sterile sites should be investigated
labs will generally not attempt to culture anaerobes from specimens collected from
oropharynx, genital tract or bowel because cultures will always be positive
culturing for anaerobic bacteria
○ Pus, fluid or tissue swaps usually not optimal because anaerobic bacteria do not survive long on them
○ Anaerobic culture requires special equipment
why do anaerobic often cause abscesses
because there is low O2 tension in pus
anaerobes cause
dental infections aspiration pneumonia peritonitis pelvic inflammatory disease bite wounds diabetic foot ulcers necrotising fasciitis
dental infections
periodontal disease
root canal infections
odontogenic infections
aspiration pneumonia
risk for unconscious patients
aspiration of oropharyngeal contents, vomit
pleural empyema
pleural empyema
pus in the pleural space
peritonitis
usually due to bacteria leaking from the bowel
PID
pelvic inflammatory disease bacteria ascending from the vagina endomitritis salpingitis tubovarian abscess
