11.4 - deep seated mycoses Flashcards
deep seated mycoses
fungal infections that affect internal body organs
caused by fungi that are virulent enough to cause disease in hints without impaired immunity
5 deep seated mycoses
Cryptococcosis blastomycosis coccidiodomycosis paracoccidioidomycosis histoplasmosis last 4 are endemic mycoses
crypto coccus neoformans and gatti
a yeast characterised by having a very large capsule
can be visualised using India ink
cryptococcus neoformans is found in
pigeon droppings
crypto coccus gattii is found in
found in eucalyptus trees
primary infection with crytococcus occurs by
inhalation, usually asymptomatic
disease with cryptococcus may occur in
immunocompetent hosts - gatii
immunocompromised hosts - neoformans
presentations of crypto coccus neoformans
pulmonary cryptococcosis - a spectrum of features with a propensity to metastasise to the brain
CNS cryptococcosis - meningoencephalitis, acute or insidious onset
disseminated cryptococcosis - nodular skin lesions, bone lesions, virtually any organ
endemic deep seated mycoses
blastomycosis
coccidiodomycosis
paracoccidiodomycosis
histoplasmosis
endemic deep seated mycosis
environmental fungi
dimorphic - mould in nature, yeast in host
acquired by inhalation of spores
most infections asymptomatic or mild respiratory symptoms
severity determined by infective dose and immune status
flu like illness and severe pneumonia
mucocutaneous pesions
brain, genitourinary, bone
