6 - 2 Human Body Organization Flashcards
Cells
The smallest part of the human body that performs all the necessary life functions.
Tissues
Groups of cells with similar structure and function.
Organs
Groups of tissues organized to perform a particular task.
Organ Systems
Groups of organs that work together to perform a necessary life function (respiration, circulation and digestion).
Muscle
Moves the body and substances within the body.
Muscle Examples
Biceps, Triceps, Heart, Arterial Walls
Nerve
Transmits messages throughout the body.
Nerve Examples
Brain, Nerve Cord, Neurons
Epithelial
Covers the surfaces of your body.
Epithelial Examples
Skin, Lining of Digestive System
Connective
Connects or holds parts of the body together.
Connective Examples
Bone, Cartilage, Fat, Blood, Tendons, Ligaments
Integumentary (skin)
Protects the body and receives stimuli from the environment. Helps control body temperature, produces vitamin D, and removes some waste.
Skeletal
Supports and protects the body. Also, allows movement, and makes blood cells.
Muscular
Moves the body and substances within it.
Digestive
Breaks down food into simple nutrients that body cells can use for energy.
Circulatory
Delivers nutrients and oxygen to body cells and carries any waste away from the cells.
Lymphatic
Helps protect the body from disease-causing organisms. A major part of your immune system.
Respiratory
Moves oxygen through the blood and carbon dioxide out of the body.
Excretory
Removes cellular waste products from the body.
Nervous
Receives and transmits messages throughout the body through electrochemical signals.
Endocrine
Controls many body functions to keep the body working properly and coordinates body systems.
Reproductive
Reproductive organs produce male and female sex cells. Female organs nourish and protect developing embryo.
