5 - 5 Evolution Flashcards
Evolution
The process of biological change over time through genetic mutations. The organisms of today are different from ancestors of the past.
Adapt
Change and find a way to survive in the new situation.
Migrate
Move to a new location either temporarily or permanently.
Extinction
Organisms that fail to adapt will go extinct (Die).
Examples of organisms that evolve quickly and can be observed
Bacteria and Insects
Examples of more complex organisms that evolve slowly
Humans and Horses
What must we use to see the changes of more complex organisms overtime?
Fossil evidence
Fossils
Fossils are evidence of past life.
Examples of fossil fuels
Bones, teeth, footprints, shells, feather impressions, etc.
What do fossils show us?
Early organisms were simple and organisms became more complex over time. New organisms appear and others die off. (extinct).
Natural Selection
Organisms that are best suited to their environment survive and pass on their genetic traits. This increases their chance for survival.
Example of Natural Selection
Bunnies changing fur color to blend in. Birds having different beaks to eat different types of food.
Artificial Selection
The intentional breeding of plants or animals to pass down wanted traits.
Examples of Artificial Selection
Seedless Watermelon and different Dog Species.
