3 - 1 Cell Energy Flashcards
Glucose
A simple sugar which provides energy for the cell
ATP
“energy-rich” molecule made from broken down sugar
The more glucose a cell can obtain-
The more ATP produced –> the more energy the cell will have
Respiration (Aerobic Respiration)
ATP produced with process including oxygen
Fermentation (Anaerobic Respiration)
ATP produced without oxygen
Organic Molecule
A product created by the reaction of glucose within the cytoplasm
CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)
A waste product created during fermentation and respiration
O2 (Oxygen)
The organic molecule combines with oxygen to produce more ATP in the cell’s mitochondrion
H2O (Water)
A waste product created during respiration
Fermentation method + number of glucose molecules produced
Primitive method; only 2 ATP per glucose molecule
Respiration method + number of glucose molecules produced
Advanced method; 36 ATP per glucose molecule
Fermentation method - is oxygen necessary?
NO oxygen
Respiration method - is oxygen necessary?
Requires oxygen
Fermentation method waste products
Wastes: CO2 and an organic molecule
Respiration method waste products
Wastes: CO2 and H2O
