2 - 2 Cell Transport Flashcards
1
Q
Cell Membrane
A
- Protects the cell.
- Maintains the shape of the cell.
- Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
2
Q
Semi-permeability
A
The Cell Membrane is Semi-permeable so only Small molecules can pass through and Large ones get stuck; like a strainer.
3
Q
Cell Transport
A
The cell membrane is made of Lipids (fat) and Proteins.
4
Q
How do substances pass through a cell membrane?
A
- Small molecules flow through the gaps between the lipids.
(Ex. Oxygen, Water, Carbon Dioxide)
-The protein channels allow larger molecules to pass through.
(Ex. Glucose, Starch)
5
Q
Passive Transport
A
Also known as Diffusion and does not require energy.
- Molecules flow from a High concentration → Low concentration until the concentrations are balanced.
- If the process involves water it’s called osmosis.
6
Q
Active Transport
A
Requires energy and large molecules pass through Carrier Proteins.
