Microscope Use and Review
- Always carry a microscope with 2 hands (1 on the arm and 1 on the base) like a baby
- A microscope should be placed in the center of the table.
- Watch the stage when adjusting the stage height with the coarse adjustment.
- Keep both eyes open when looking through the ocular (eyepiece).
- The object under the microscope will move the opposite direction when you adjust the position of the stage.
- Use lens paper to clean the microscope.

Arm
Structure used to hold all parts together
Coarse adjustment knob
Makes large adjustments to the height of the stage
Fine adjustment knob
Makes small adjustments to the height of the stage
Stage adjustment knob
Moves the stage left and right, side to side
Base
Supports the microscope
Brightness adjustment knob
Regulates and increases the light intensity
Diaphragm
Regulates the amount of light entering, focuses the slide to your eyes
Stage
Supports the slides
Stage clamp
Holds the slides firmly in place
Calculating Total Magnification
Objective x Ocular = Total
How do you put a microscope away?
- Put the stage all the way down.
- Switch objectives to scanning.
- Wrap up the cords.
- Place the microscope and cords in the cabinet.
