54 Distemper Flashcards
What forms of morbillivirus can be observed on EM?
Spherical and filamentous
What is the H protein and its function?
Hemagglutinin; attachment to cells
What is the F protein and its function?
Fusion protein; cell fusion and virus penetration
What is the function of nucleoprotein?
Protect the genomic RNA
Do morbilliviruses have a transcriptase?
Yes
What is the M protein and its function in morbilliviruses (not to be confused with M protein in streptococcus)?
Matrix protein; stabilizes the virion
What glycoproteins on host cells do hemagglutinin bind to, and why is one of them very important during infection?
-Nectin-4 on polarized epithelial cells
-SLAM (signaling lymphocyte activation molecule); only on leukocytes and binding causes profound immunosuppression
What kind of genome do morbilliviruses have?
Negative sense ssRNA
T or F: morbillivirus does not require the host cell’s nucleus to replicate
T; everything happens in the cytoplasm
Are morbilliviruses enveloped?
Yes
What wildlife species are susceptible to canine distemper?
Gray foxes and black-footed ferrets, phocids, nonhuman primates
Where does canine distemper enter the body, and where does it multiply?
Enters in the tonsils/bronchial LN’s. Multiplies in the lymphoid system
What will you find on a CBC from a dog with CDV?
Leukopenia
What are some clinical signs of CDV?
Ocular discharge, upper resp disease, fever, bronchointerstitial pneumonia, sometimes GI disease, crusty footpads, can progress to severe encephalitis
What effect can CDV have on teeth?
Can cause enamel hypoplasia in puppies because ameloblasts are susceptible
