What is an emergent leader? What are the benefits and negatives of having emergent leaders?
They come from within the group because they are skilful or because the team has appointed them
+ They win over the hearts and minds of the team mates as they are recognised as one of their own
- may lack objectivity
Many have bias due to their personal friendships
What is a prescribed leader? What are the benefits and negatives of having a prescribed leader?
Appointed to a team from an external source
+ have more objective
‘Fresh pair of eyes’ - may result in more creative strategies
- do not share or are aware of team culture (might delay active decision making)

Autocratic
Democratic
Laissez-faire

Are more dictorial
Make most of decisions
Tend to have commanding and direct approach
Little interest in the individuals that make up a group

Person orientated - value views of group members
Tend to share decisions - care about individuals

Make few decisions
Give little feedback
Individuals do as they wish

When discipline and control is needed
When hostile groups are involved
Early stage of learning (novice performer)
If situation is dangerous or task is unclear

When group members wish to make a decision
Suits advanced performers who have knowledge to contribute
Suitable if the situation is not dangerous

Suitable for high level performers or elite athletes

Certain traits produce certain patterns of behaviour
There patterns are consistent across different situations

Leadership characteristics are learned through others - (vicarious learning)
If you observe a person showing leadership who is of a higher status to you, then your more likely to copy it
Shows the importance of the environment for adopting leadership qualities
What is the interactionist theory of leadership?
Individuals have certain traits, but they are not evident unless a situation demands that leadership behvaiour
