4.1 - Memory Models Flashcards
What is encoding?
Conversion of information into codes
What are the 3 types of codes which information can be stored in?
Visual codes
Auditory codes
Semantic codes
What is storage
Retention of information over a period of time
What is retrieval
Recover information that has been stored
What is chunking?
Different pieces of information can be grouped together and then remembered as one piece of information
What is selective attention?
Ignoring irrelevant information
Describe the short term sensory store (3)
Large capacity
Information stored for 1/4 to 1 second before it is filtered
Selective attention takes place
Describe the short term memory store (3)
Limited store (around 7 pieces)
Information stored fro around 30 seconds
If important enough and rehearsed then its passed onto the LTM
Describe the long term memory store (3)
Unlimited capacity
Information can be stored for long periods of time
Motor programmes stored in memory for long periods of time (causes skill to become automatic)
What is the craik and lockhart levels of processing model
Information is more likely to be remembered if it is considered, understood and has meaning.
What are the three levels related to the processing of verbal information? (Craik and Lockhart)
Structural level (paying attention to what words look like)
Phonetic level (processing the sounds of the words)
Semantic level (considers the actual meaning of the words)
