4.1 - Classification Of Skills Flashcards
What is the difficulty continuum
Simple ——————— complex
What is the environmental continuum
Open ——————— closed
What is the pacing continuum
Self paced ——————— externally paced
What is the muscular involvement continuum
Gross ——————— fine
What is the continuity continuum
Discrete ——— serial ———— continuous
What is the organisation continuum
High ——————— low
What’s the difference between simple and complex skills
Simple - very few decisions to make
No/few subroutines
Fairly repetitive
E.g. a sprint start in swimming
Complex - decisions to make
Have sub routines
May need to be broken down]
E.g a midfielder in football who needs to make lots of decisions before passing
What’s the difference between open and closed skills
Open - affected by environment
Unpredictable
Predominantly perceptual
E.g passing a football in a match
Closed - not affected by the environment
Predictable, repetitive
Definite end and beginning
Self paced
E.g a free throw in basketball practice
What’s the difference between self paced and externally paced skills
Self paced - performer chooses when to execute skills
Usually closed skills
E.g a javelin throw
Externally paced - pace controlled by alternate factors such as weather or opponents
E.g receiving a serve in badminton
What is the difference between gross and fine skills
Gross - involve large muscle movement
Not very precise
E.g shot putt
Fine - involve more intricate movements
Small muscle group
Tend to be precise
Rely on hand eye coordination
E.g a snooker shot
What’s the difference between continuous, serial and discrete skills
Continuous - no clear beginning or end
Skill is repeated as a pattern
E.g cycling
Serial - have several discrete elements which are put together
E.g a sequence of skills in a triple jump
Discrete - clear beginning or end
Skill is single and specific
Can be repeated but from the start
E.g a penalty kick in football
What is the difference between high and low skills
High - has sub routines which are difficult to break up
E.g dribbling in basketball
Low - subroutines are easily broken up and identified seperately
E.g a tennis serve
