Definition of Reciprocity
How two people interact e.g mother and child. This interaction is reciprocal and a two way relationship, two people respond to each others signals and they elicit a response from one another
What research was conducted into Reciprocity?
Feldman and Eidelman (2007)
Feldman (2007)
Brazelton et al (1975)
Jaffe (1973)
Feldman and Eidelman (2007) research
Found from birth babies and mothers spend alot of time in intense and pleasurable interaction.
Babies have periodic “alert phases” and signal they are ready for interaction.
Mothers typically pick up on this and respond to the infants alertness 2/3rds of the time
Feldman (2007) research
From around 3 months, interaction is increasingly frequent and involves close attention to verbal signals and facial expressions.
Brazelton et al (1975) research
Challenged the traditional view on childhood that babies play a passive role, receiving care from an adult.
Found babies play an active in interaction by initiating it.
Parents and children appear to take turns in interactions
Brazelton described this as a ‘Dance’
Jaffe (1973) research
Found infants coordinated their actions whith caregivers in a kind of conversation
From birth babies will move in a rhythm when interacting with an adult almost like they are taking turns
