4.3 Memory - Types of Long Term Memory Flashcards
Episodic LTM
Store of personal events containing the likes of who, what, where, when and why. These are usually time stamped and require conscious effort to recall e.g birthdays, good and bad events
Semantic LTM
Store of our knowledge of the world including facts, often we can’t remember when we learnt this but we constantly gain semantic memories and they have to be recalled consciously e.g capital cities, celebrities and friends birthdays
Procedural LTM
Store of knowledge on how to do things such as skills which are often done unconsciously with little effort e.g reading, writing and talking
What two clinical studies supports the different types of LTM
. Clive Wearing
. HM
How does Clive Wearing support LTM types
He was able to remember some aspects of LTM such as how to play the piano which is procedural but couldn’t remember the likes of how he was educated which is episodic
How does the study of HM support different types of LTM
He was able to remember what a dog was but couldn’t remember stroking one earlier, he could also remember how to do skills so his episodic memory was damaged as he couldn’t remember any long term memories
Advantages of different types of LTM
. Scientific due to evidence gathered through objective brain scanning from Tulving et al who made participants perform memory tasks whilst in a PET scan
. Useful as it has led to implementing treatment to help improve people’s lives which has positive economic impact
