What is statistical deviation?

A

Behaviour that is classed as statistically uncommon and is rare in society. E.g the bottom and top 1%

What is the IDD Example

A

Intellectual disability disorder. Given to those with an IQ of under 70 (Bottom 2.5%) and those with over 130 (Top 2.5%) classed as abnormal as they are two standard deviations away from the average

Strengths of statistical deviation

A

. Real life applications - diagnosed individuals can get support
. People who are classed as abnormal can get a better quality of life due to treatment or help
. Help given to people could make them more active in the economy

Limitations of statistical deviation

A

. Not all abnormal behaviours are infrequent e.g depression is 1 in 4 so results are unsuitable
. Ignores the fact some behaviours are common
