Informed Consent
Participants must be given information on the nature and purpose of the study so that can fully consent
How is informed consent overcome?
- By issuing a consent form
- Gaining parental consent for under 16s
- Gain retrospective consent after the study
- Presumptive, ask a similar group if they would be happy to conduct the study prior to the research
Deception
The researcher must avoid misleading the participant through lying and withholding information
How is deception overcome?
- Conduct a debrief to give all relevant data, answer questions, offer counselling and give participants the option to withhold their findings on them
Right to withdraw
Participants have the right to leave the study at any time and should be made aware of this
How is right to withdraw overcome?
- Debrief participants to explain why they weren’t given right to withdraw
- Allow them to withdraw data if they want to
Protection from harm
Researcher must ensure participants are protected from both physical and psychological harm when being studied
How is protection from harm overcome?
- Give participants access to free counselling
- Debriefing to answer any questions and give them to right to withdraw their data
Privacy and Confidentiality
The researcher should not disclose any personal details about the participant e.g. name and age and they should be kept anonymous.
