Q

Baddeley (1966) Procedure

A

Baddeley created 4 groups to see how information is coded in LTM and STM:
. Group 1 (Acoustically Similar) - Words that sounded alike e.g cat car cab
. Group 2 (Acoustically Dissimilar) - Words that sound different e.g pit few cow
. Group 3 (Semantically Similar) - Words with similar meanings e.g great large big
. Group 4 (Semantically Dissimilar) - Words with different meanings e.g good hot huge

Q

What did Baddeley (1966) find out about STM?

A

Acoustically similar words are remembered less than dissimilar - showing an importance of sounds in STM so Coding = Acoustic

Q

What are the limitations of Baddeleys study on LTM and STM Coding?

A

. Lacks Mundane Realism - People do not generally recall lists in every day life
. Research is doe in a Lab Setting so lacks Ecological Validity
