4.1.1 Memory - Coding of Memory Flashcards
What is Memory?
The ability to recall events, experiences, information and skills
Coding
Format in which information is stored in the various different areas of memory
What did Baddeley (1966) conduct research into?
Both LTM and STM coding
Baddeley (1966) Procedure
Baddeley created 4 groups to see how information is coded in LTM and STM:
. Group 1 (Acoustically Similar) - Words that sounded alike e.g cat car cab
. Group 2 (Acoustically Dissimilar) - Words that sound different e.g pit few cow
. Group 3 (Semantically Similar) - Words with similar meanings e.g great large big
. Group 4 (Semantically Dissimilar) - Words with different meanings e.g good hot huge
What did Baddeley (1966) find out about STM?
Acoustically similar words are remembered less than dissimilar - showing an importance of sounds in STM so Coding = Acoustic
What are the limitations of Baddeleys study on LTM and STM Coding?
. Lacks Mundane Realism - People do not generally recall lists in every day life
. Research is doe in a Lab Setting so lacks Ecological Validity
What are the strengths of Baddeleys study on LTM and STM Coding?
. Lab setting means high control of extraneous variables
What did Baddeley (1966) find out abour LTM?
Semantically similar words remembered less then semantically dissimilar words demonstrating an importance in meaning for the long term
