5.1 The characteristics and Classification of Skill Flashcards
Define the term skill.
1.1
Skill- the consistent production of goal-oriented movements, which are learned and specific to the task (McMorris 2004).
* goal-oriented, skill will achieve an end result
* the better you perform the skill the more certain you are of achieving the goal
* minimum outlay of energy to meet performance goal
* practice & experience
Describe the different types of skill.
1.2
Motor skills- Emphasis on learned movement without much thinking required.
* Weight lifting
Cognitive skills- Requires a lot of thinking. Knowledge of the game & decision making also required. The ability to solve problems and make correct decisions
* creating space in basketball
Perceptual skills- Using your senses to assess a situation and help you make decisions.
Sense things and interpret them
Vision, hearing, touch etc.
* sight & depth perception in rock-climbing
Perceptual-Motor skills- Thinking, Interpretation of environmental stimuli, motor response to this sensory info
* Interpreting opponent’s line & changing direction or sidestepping in rugby is an example
List the different approaches to classifying motor skills.
1.3
- gross–fine
- open–closed
- discrete–serial–continuous
- external–internal paced skills
- interaction continuum (individual– coactive–interactive)
Outline the gross-fine approach to classifying motor skills.
1.3
Outline the open-closed approach to classifying motor skills.
1.3
Outline the discrete–serial–continuous approach to classifying motor skills.
1.3
Outline the external–internal paced skills approach to classifying motor skills.
1.3
Outline the interaction continuum (individual– coactive–interactive) approach to classifying motor skills.
1.3
Compare skill profiles for contrasting sports.
1.4
Outline ability.
1.5
Distinguish between Fleishman’s physical proficiency abilities (physical factors)
and perceptual motor abilities (psychomotor factors).
1.6
Distinguish between Fleishman’s physical proficiency abilities (physical factors) and perceptual motor abilities (psychomotor factors) in different sports
1.6
Define the term technique.
1.7
Technique- “way of doing”. In the performance of a specific sports skill it is defined as the “way in which that sports skill is performed”.
State the relationship between ability, skill, and technique.
1.8
Skill = ability + selection of an appropriate technique.
Discuss the differences between a skilled and a novice performer.
