4.3 Classification Flashcards
Give the 8 levels of hierarchical classification.
- Domain
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
What is the difference between phylogeny and taxonomy?
Phylogeny is the study of evolutionary relationships between species but taxonomy is the study of classification.
What is the binomial naming system?
The genus name then the species name. e.g homo sapiens.
What is artificial classification?
Classification based on a few characteristics. It doesn’t reflect evolutionary relationships but it is more stable.
What is natural classification?
Classification based on many characteristics. It reflects evolutionary relationships and is more useful. However it can change with advancing knowledge.
Name the 3 domains.
- Eukarya
- Archaea
- Bacteria
Name the 5 kindoms.
- Prokaryota (bacteria)
- Plantae. (eukarya)
- Animalia (eukarya)
- Fungi (eukarya)
- Protoctista. (eukarya)
What is variation?
Differences between individuals. The presence of variety.
What 2 factors cause variation?
Genetic factors and Environmental factors.
What is Interspecific variation?
Interspecific variation is variation between members of the same species.
What is Intraspecific variation?
Intraspecific variation is variation between members of different species.
What is Discontinuous variation?
Discontinuous variation is variation with discrete categories and no intermediate values. e.g red, blue, e.c.t
What is Continuous variation
Continuous variation is variation within a range extreme values. e.g height
What is an Adaptation?
A characteristic that helps survival and reproduction in the habitat.
What are the 3 types of adaptation?
Anatomical Adaptation-structural features
Behavioural Adaptation-how behaviour is modified for survival
Physiological Adaptations- functionings of cellular processes
