4.3 Carbon Cycling Flashcards
List the forms of Carbon Dioxide
Atmospheric Gases, Oceanic Gases, As Organic Material, As Non-Living Remains
Examples of CO2 as Atmosphere gas
Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and Methane (CH4)
How are atmospheric gases transformed and transferred
Transformed into the atmosphere as a waste product of aerobic respiration
Transferred to organic material via photosynthesis and into the ocean via molecular diffusion
Examples of Oceanic Gases
Dissolved bicarbonates and calcium carbonates
What is feeding
How chemical energy in carbon compounds flows through food chains by means of feeding
How do consumers obtain energy
Through the carbon compounds in the organisms on which they feed
Define Egestion
The removal of feces from an animal that contains carbon
How are fuels generally formed
Dead organisms are unable to fully decompose in acidic and anaerobic conditions. They become sediment that may become fossil fuels, coal, oil or natural gas
How is peat formed
When partially decomposed organic matter is compressed in anaerobic/acidic conditions such as waterlogged soil. It forms a brown soil like carbon rich matter
