2.4 Protien Flashcards
Composition of Protiens
Long chains of recurring monomers called amino acids
Common basic structure of Amino Acids
Central carbon atom bound to:
An amine group (NH2)
A carboxylic acid group (COOH)
A hydrogen atom (H)
A variable side chain (R)
Draw Structure of a Generalised Amino Acid
(‘Draw’)
Purpose of Polypeptides
Make up protiens
Formation of Polypeptides
Amino acids join together on ribsomes
Form long chains of ‘polypeptides’
Variety of Amino acids
Each amino acid differs in composition due to variable side chain
Distinct properties (polarity/charge/etc.)
Thus, protein will fold/function differently according to specific position within polypeptide chain
How Amino Acids join
Covalently bonded via condensation to form a dipeptide and water
