4.2-biodiversity=chatting shit Flashcards
what are the 2 types of sampling?
random and non random
what are the 3 types of non random sampling?
opportunistic
stratified
systematic
what are the disadvantages of random sampling?
may not cover all areas of a habitat equally, species with a low presence may be missed, leading to a misunderstanding of biodiversity.
what is opportunistic sampling?
when researcher makes sampling decisions based on prior knowledge or during the process of collecting data.
what is stratified sampling?
dividing a habitat into areas which appear different, and sampling each area differently.
what is systematic sampling?
when samples are taken at fixed intervals across the habitat.
what are examples of systematic techniques?
belt transects
line transects
what is an advantage of opportunistic sampling?
easier and quicker than random
what is a disadvantage of opportunistic sampling?
data may be biased-researcher may be drawn to include certain species leading to over representation
what is an advantage of stratified sampling?
ensures all different areas of a habitat are sampled and species aren’t under represented-none are missed
what is a disadvantage of stratified sampling?
could lead to some overrepresentation if there are samples taken from small areas that look different
where is systematic sampling especially useful?
when habitat shows a clear gradient in some environmental factor
what is a disadvantage of systematic sampling?
only species on line or within belt can be recorded- could miss out species leading to an underestimate of biodiversity.
What are the three types of biodiversity?
- habitat
- species
- genetic
What is habitat diversity?
Range of habitats in which different species live
