3.3- plants Flashcards
Why do plants need a transport system?
To move:
1) water and minerals from roots up to leaves
2) sugars from leaves to rest of plant
What travels in the xylem tissue and what direction?
Water and soluble mineral ions travel upwards
What travels in the phloem tissue and what direction?
Assimilates travel up or down
What are dicotyledonous plants?
Plants with 2 seed leaves and a branching pattern of veins in the leaf.
instead of “if co2 conc is low rate of photosynthesis drops” say
if co2 conc is low rate of photosynthesis cannot increase.
why is it bad if a plant can only anaerobically respire?
ethanol is toxic
alcohol fermentation is irreversible
how does water get into a root endodermis??
ions are actively pumped in, lowers water potential, water moves in by osmosis.
why is lignin essential in the wall of a xylem vessel? (long)
provides, strength / support ;
keeps vessel tube, open + prevents collapse transpiration produces tension / negative
pressure ;
to waterproof the, cell / vessel / tube / wall ;
(so) cell, dies / content decays ;
to create a continuous column / allow unimpeded flow ;
to limit lateral flow of water ;
adhesion ;
