4. Mechanism, diagnosis and treatment of joint dislocations Flashcards
What is a sprain?
Hungarian: Rándulás
- A sudden movement abruptly forcing the joint to exceed its functional range of motion
- There might be a dislocation that returns to its original position.
What is a joint dislocation?
Hungarian: Ficam
luxation, occurs when there is an abnormal separation in the joint, where two or more bones meet.
subluxation is an incomplete/partial dislocation of a joint
How can a joint dislocation be diagnosed?
X-ray → check for any fractures as well,as it can be difficult to differentiate between a dislocation and fracture
How is a joint dislocation treated?
Reduction as soon as possible (blood supply may be compromised)
What is important to do after a dislocation?
Splint to maintain position
Physiotherapy
Joints can become prone to repeated dislocations after the first dislocation.
What is the most common joint that becomes dislocated?
Shoulder joint
50% of dislocations
others:patella, elbow, knee, ankle
What are the types of shoulder dislocations?
Anterior 85%
Posterior 14%
Inferior 1%
What are the signs of an anterior shoulder rotation?
slight External rotation and
Abduction
What are the signs of an posterior shoulder rotation?
Internal rotation
Adduction
What are the complications of a shoulder dislocation?
Fractures
Nerve injury
What are the types of fractures that can occur in a shoulder dislocation?
- Hill-sachs (humerus head impaction) -
- Bankart (anterior, inferior glenoid labrum)
hill sachs lesion seen after reduction
