What are the complications of diaphyseal fractures of the femur?
A
- Hemorrhage (femoral artery → 2 L blood loss!!!)
- Nerve injury
- Infection
- Non-union
- Mal-union
- Fat embolism * DVT!!!

What is the treatment for diaphesial fracture of the femur?
A
Temporary: traction before surgery
Internal fixation with an intramedulary nail (within 24 hours) OR plate fixation
External fixation – used temporarily when the wound is contaminated → later internal fixation

What is the healing time for femoral fractures?
A
4 – 6 months
