  • Hemorrhage (femoral artery → 2 L blood loss!!!)
  • Nerve injury
  • Infection
  • Non-union
  • Mal-union
  • Fat embolism * DVT!!!

What is the treatment for diaphesial fracture of the femur?

A

Temporary: traction before surgery

Internal fixation with an intramedulary nail (within 24 hours) OR plate fixation

External fixation – used temporarily when the wound is contaminated → later internal fixation
