35. Symptoms and therapy of Achilles tendon ruptures Flashcards
What are the symptoms of achilles tendon rupture?
sharp pain, often described as feeling like being kicked in the leg.
What are the signs of an achiles tendon rupture?
- With a partial rupture, physical examination may only reveal a localized, tender area of swelling.
- With complete rupture, examination normally reveals a palpable defect in the tendon
Thompson test squeezing the calf does not cause active plantar flexion, and the patient usually is incapable of performing a single heel-raise.
What is the treatment of achiles tendon rupture?
Nonoperative treatment selected for minor ruptures, less active patients
Operative:
Percutaneous: several small incisions:
* decreased dissection
* Potential entrappment of sural nerve
* Potential tendon rupture
Open surgery:
* Complete examination of injury
* Better tendon reaproximation
* Higher rates of of wound dehiscence and skin adhesion problems
Post-op management consists of a partial weight bearing short leg cast for 6 to 8 weeks.
