16. Treatment of humeral fractures (humerus neck and diaphysis)

What to do in case of a humerus neck fracture?

Answer 1

Surgical neck:
* support with sling for 4 – 6 weeks, physiotherapy
* IF UNSTABLE operate

Question 2

What to do in case of a diaphysis fracture?

Answer 2

Diaphysis:
* Immobilization with sling, splinter or cast.
* If severe dislocation or open fracture do an internal fixation with intamedullary or plates screws.(ORIF)

What to do in case of a humeral greater tuberosity fracture?

Answer 3

• Support for 3 – 4 weeks. (splint, functional brace)
• If open fracture, fragment is stuck, failed closed reduction
  then do an operation(ORIF)

Usually in elderly, can fragment into many pieces → open reduction / in elderly prosthesis
