refers to the rules for using words, including semantics (meaning of words) and syntax (how the order of words makes meaning).
syntax
how the order of words makes meanings
nonverbal cues
includes facial expressions, gestures and body language which help express feelings and intentions
cooing
characterized by the production of vowel like sounds, “oo”, “ah.” First form of vocal communication.
babbling
often repeated patterns of sounds– “ba-ba”
one-word stage
: understanding and beginning to say many nouns (1 at a time). “Mama” or “Dada”
telegraphic speech
adding verbs, and making sentences but missing words (“See bird! Play Hockey, Daddy Milk”)
overgeneralization
words, like “ I am going to broom the floor” or “I goed to the store”
