3.1 - Themes & Methods in Developmental Psychology Flashcards
Stability
traits do not change much throughout life. Nature is going to determine your personality and temperament.
Change
infers that the environment or nurture will impact your personality and temperament.
Nature
Inherited biological factors, such as genes, that influence physical, emotional, and intellectual traits
Nurture
Environmental factors, such as nutrition, comfort, and learning, that influence a person’s traits
Experiences, such as early childhood experiences, social relationships, and culture
Continuous
Researchers who see development as a function of experience tend to see development as continuous and gradual. Nurture is continuous
Discontinuous
Researchers who focus on biological maturation see spurts of growth and other changes that make one stage of development very different from another. Nature is discontinuous
Cross-sectional Research
Examine people of different ages all at once (two+ groups of people) (study multiple ages and their sleeping habits) (see differences between ages all at once)
Longitudinal Research
track the performance of one group of people, or cohort, over time (only take infants sleeping habits and study over time) (track one group of people but cant study more than one group at a time and takes lots of time)
