2.6 - Retrieving Memories Flashcards
recall
is like “fill-in-the-blank.” You retrieve information previously learned and unconsciously stored.
recognition
is like “multiple choice.” You identify which stimuli match your stored information.
retrieval cues
stimuli that help people retrieve memories.
context-dependent memory
We retrieve a memory more easily when in the same conditions/surroundings as when we formed the memory.
mood-congruent memory
refers to the tendency to selectively recall details that are consistent with one’s current mood.
state-dependent memory
refers to recalling information when in the same level of consciousness, such as being more alert on caffeine
testing effect
if your distributed practice includes testing (having to answer questions about the material), you will learn more and retain more than if you merely reread.
metacognition
is the awareness of our own thought process. Often referred to as “thinking about our thinking.” Allows people to evaluate strengths and weaknesses for memory application. Did your studying techniques work? If so, which method?
