1.2 Overview of the Nervous System Flashcards
Nervous System
the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system in the body. It is the center of all mental activity including thought, learning, and memory.
Central Nervous System
The central nervous system [CNS] consists of the brain and spinal cord.
The CNS makes decisions for the body.
Peripheral Nervous System
The peripheral nervous system [PNS] consists of ‘the rest’ of the nervous system.
The PNS gathers and sends information to and from the rest of the body.
Somatic Nervous System
Controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscles
Autonomic Nervous System
Controls self regulated action of internal organs and glands
The sympathetic NS
arouses
(fight-or-flight)
The parasympathetic NS
calms
(rest and digest)
