2.3 DNA Replication Flashcards
Why does cell division occur?
The to produce more cells needed for growth and repair
E.g. Of epithelial tissues
What is produced due to cell division?
2 daughter cells that are genetically identical
What are epithelial tissues?
Skin cells
What is DNA replication controlled by?
Enzymes
What does DNA helicade do?
It unzips the DNA strands
How does DNA helicase work?
It travels along the backbone catalysing reactions that break the bonds between complimentary base pairs
What do free nucleotides pair with?
Exposed bases
What does DNA polymerase do?
Catalyses the formation of bonds between nucleotides
What bonds form between nucleotides?
PHOSPHODIESTER
What does DNA polymerase travel?
3 to 5 prime
What strand of DNA is continuously replicated?
The leading strand
What is DNA made up of?
Repeating units of nucleotides so it is a polynucleotide
What is the laggin strand?
The strand replicated 5 prime to 3 prime
How is the laggin strand replicated?
In short strands called okasaki fragments
