2.3 Controlling fertility Flashcards
What is three ways the fertile period can be identified and how? (6)
- Increase in blood
- Measure body temperature (temp increase by 0.5’C)
- Examination of cervical mucus (less viscous watery and thin)
Whats infertility?
When you are not sexually active
Difference between continuous fertility and Cyclical Fertility?
Men are continuously fertile where as woman are cyclical fertile (one or more eggs released a month)
What are the four treatments for infertility?
- Stimulating ovary
- Artifical insemination
- Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
- In vitro fertilisation (IVF)
Whats three different contraceptions?
- Condom
- Cervix cap
- Calendar method
Whats a chemical method of contraception?
An oral pill which can contain progesterone and Oestrogen (mimic negative feedback) which prevents release of FSH and LH
What are some causes of infertility in males and females?
Males: bad diet, low motile sperm, abnormal sperm, bad diet
Woman: bad diet, hormonal imbalance, fibroid, implantation failure
What are all of the treatments for infertility?
Stimulating ovulation, artificial insemination, intro cytoplasmic sperm injections (ICSI), in vitro fertilisation (IVF)
Whats stimulating the ovary and why is this?
Happens when failure of female to ovulate and can be fixed with drugs which mimic effects of FSH and LH or drugs which prevent negative feedback so FSH and LH doesn’t inhibit pituitary
What is artificial insemination and why might it be used?
It usually is used if male has abnormal sperm or low motile and the sperm is usually frozen, refrozen then injected into female reproductive tract and if sterile use donor
What is intro cytoplasmic sperm injections and why is this caused?
If sperm in defective. The head of the sperm is injected into the egg and can be used as IVF
What is in vitro fertilisation and why is this caused?
The oviduct could be blocked or bad sperm. What happens is the egg is surgically removed, the egg is put into a dish and then sperm are put in the dish for fertilisation, the fertilised egg is then planted into the uterus
What does PGD stand for and what does it do?
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and can look at if the chromosome disorder/ abnormalities and can be used in conjunction with IVF
What are physical methods of contraception?
Condom, cervix cap, Callander method
What are chemical methods of contraception?
Pills which mimic negative feedback
