2 Vocab - Skeletal System Flashcards
Bones
Provide resting ground for muscles and protection of vital organs
Skeletal System
Bodys framework composed of bones and joints
Joints
Junction of bones, muscles, and connective tissue at which movement occurs.
Also known as an articulation
Axial skeleton
Portion of skeletal system that consists of skull, rib cage, and vertebral column
Appendicular skeleton
Portion of skeletal system includes upper and lower extremities
Remodeling
Process of resorption and formation of bone
Osteoclasts
A type of bone cell that removes bone tissue
Osteoblasts
Type of cell that is responsible for bone information
Epiphysis
End of long bones, mainly composed of cancellous bone, house much of red marrow involved in red blood cell production.
They are one of the primary sites for bone growth
Diaphysis
Shaft portion of a long bone
Epiphyseal plate
Region of long bone connecting the diaphysis to the epiphysis. It is a later of subdividing cartilaginous cells in which growth in length if the diaphysis occurs
Periosteum
Dense membrane composed of fibrous connective tissue that closely wraps (invests) all bone, except that if the articulating surfaces in joints, which are covered by a synovial membrane
Medullar cavity
The central cavity of bone shafts where marrow is stored
Articular cartilage
Cartilage that covers the articular surfaces of bones
Depressions
Flattened of indented portions of bone, which can be muscle attachment sites
