Directional terms
Describe how one body part relates to another
Anterior or Ventral
Situated before or in front of something
Posterior or dorsal
Situated behind or in back of something
Superior or Cranial
Situated higher, toward the crown of the head
Inferior or Caudal
Situated lower, farther from the crown of the head
Medial
Pertaining to the middle or center of the body, nearer to the midline
Lateral
On the side, farther from the midline or center of the body
Distal
Farthest from the point of attachment of the extremity (distant)
Proximal
Nearest to the point of attachment of an extremity (proximity)
Sagittal plane
Divides the body into left and right parts by an imaginary lave running vertically down the body
Midsagittal
Plane that divides the body or an organ into right and left halves
Coronal plane
Aka frontal plane
Divides the body into the anterior (ventral) and posterior (dorsal) parts
Transverse plane
Divides body horizontally into a superior (cranial) and inferior (caudal) portion
“Perpendicular” opposite directions
Erect position
Body is in a standing position
Anatomic position
Body is standing with the arms hanging on the side, palms facing forward
Supine
Body is lying in a horizontal position with face and palms turned up
Prone
Body is lying in a horizontal position with the face and palms turned down
Lateral recumbent
Body is lying horizontally on either the right or the left side
Frontal
Region on the anterior surface of the skull
Temporal
Region of the temples on the lateral surface of the skull
Occipital
Region on the posterior surface (base) of the skull
Parietal
Region of the skull that is between the frontal and occipital regions
Mastoid
Region of the temporal bone behind the ear
Cervical
Region of the neck
Lumbar
Region of the lower back
Thoracic
Region of the back that is between the cervical and lumbar regions
Pectoral
Region of the chest
Deltoid
Region of the shoulder joint
Axiliary
Region of the armpit
Scapular
Region of the shoulder blade

Region between the shoulder and the elbow
Antebrachial
