2 - APP - Unit 1.1 - Medical terminology Flashcards
Anatomy
Study of large structures of the body (or large organism and how it is put together)
Physiology
Study of vital processes, mechanisms and functions of an organ or group of organs
Histology
Study of microscopic structures ( cells + tissues)
- Branch of Biology (study of life)
- Intracellular (inside the cell)
- Extra cellular (outside the cell)
Livings things are made of…
… cells and intracellular materials organized to form various tissues, organs and systems of the body
Pathology
Study of the structural functional changes caused by disease
Disease
Any abnormal and unhealthy structure and/or function
Disease generally have symptoms
Symptom
Cause by the disease and experienced by the victim (cannot be measured).
Expl: dizziness, chills, nausea, pain
Sign
Observable indication of a disease
Expl: abnormal pulse rate, fever, abnormal skin color, physical irregularities
Infection
Large enough number of microorganisms entering the body, multiplying and becoming armful and capable of destroying healthy tissues
Local infection
Invading organisms confined to a small area.
No massage to site of local infection.
Systemic infection
Organisms spread throughout the body.
No massage in case of systemic infection.
Inflammation
Protective tissue responses characterized by swelling, redness, heat and pain.
Fever
Elevated body temperature resulting from toxic bacteria or reaction between invading organisms and white blood cells that release a substance into the bloodstream and affect the body’s heat regulating system.
Creates histamine
Homeostasis
Delicate internal balance and harmony the body strives to maintain (equilibrium)
Stress
Psychological or physical situation or condition that causes tension or strain.
Any element or situation that requires body or mind to compensate to maintain delicate internal balance & harmony.
