When do you transfuse?
Basic rule of thumb: only if a patient is symptomatic because every blood product is potentially dangerous
When do we use fresh frozen plasma?
For multiple coagulation factor deficiency (DIC, cirrhosis, warfarin overdose); NEVER for restoring volume/blood pressure
Transfusion febrile reaction - due to what?
HLA antibodies - type II HSR (only happens if someone has had a previous transfusion or has been pregnant)
Woman postpartum (difficult pregnancy) had transfusion, 1 week later - jaundice and drop in hemoglobin
Delayed transfusion reaction - would get a Coombs test
The most common cause of jaundice in the first 24 hours of life in a baby?
AB/O incompatibility
What does UV light do for bilirubin?
Conjugates it so that it can be excreted in the urine
