1.7 Lipids Flashcards
1
Q
What are lipids?
A
- class of molecules that do not include true polymers
2
Q
What is the size of lipids? Are they polar? (3)
A
- lipids are generally small in size
- hence they are not considered to be true a macromolecule
- lipids are non polar (hydrophobic)
3
Q
What are the three types of lipids, and name some of examples of them
A
- Fats (saturated or unsaturated)
- Phospholipids (part of cell membrane)
- Steroids (estrogen, testosterone, cholesterol)
4
Q
What are fats composed of?
A
- glycerol and fatty acids
5
Q
What Is glycerol?
A
- classified as an alcohol (hydroxyl group 3’)
6
Q
What are fatty acids?
A
- long carbon chains (carboxyl group at one end)
7
Q
What linkage joins 3 fatty acids to glycerol? What is it?
A
Ester linkage, which is a bond between hydroxyl and a carboxyl group
8
Q
What is a saturated fatty acid? (2)
A
- no double bonds between carbons in the carbon chain
- therefore more hydrogen
9
Q
What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
A
- contains one or more double bonds
10
Q
What are phospholipids? (2)
A
- major components of cell membranes
- two fatty acids attached to glycerol and a phosphate
11
Q
Phospholipids assemble as a bilayer in water. Why? (4)
A
- hydrophobic tails
- Hydrophilic heads
- the phosphate group (-) is attracted to polar water molecules
- the fatty acids are neutral because equal sharing of electrons, so they are not attracted to water
12
Q
What are steroids?
A
- lipids that have four fused carbon rings
13
Q
What determines the type of steroid?
A
- unique groups attached to the ring determine the type of steroid
Ex. Testosterone
