Tall structure def
a structure with many layers, clear chain of command and narrow span of control
e.g. mcdonalds, military

-slow communication due to multiple layers
-higher costs due to multiple management layers
-resentment if co-worker gets promotion
-not appropriate for start up –> responsobilities not clear, taksk overlap
flat structure def
structuer with fewer layers, wider spans of control for managers
e..g. google, netflix

+fast communication
+low costs due to fewer managers
+employrrs more empowered
+ no resentment as no superiority and inferioriy
-managers may be overworked –> too many subordinates
-less opportunity for promotion –> less motivation

structure that orgnaises employees from diffrent disciplines or divisions into teams/ projects e.g. nike, cocaCola

Encourages collaboration across departments Efficient use of resources and expertise Improves flexibility and adaptability Enhances communication and problem-solving
❌ Disadvantages:
Can cause confusion with dual authority Risk of conflict between managers More complex decision-making process Higher administrative costs
Span of control def
number of subordinates that report directly to manager
narrow spans –> close supervision / wide span –> more delegation
chain of command definition
line of authority in an organisstion –> who maes decisions and who reports to whom
tall structures –> long chain / flat strucutres –> short chain
Delegation def
passing authority down the hierarchy to allow employees to make decisions
effective delegation can imporve efficiency and motivation BUT tasks can be delegated wrongly and some employees make lack willingless of skills to do tasks asked
Centrlised structures def
Cen= business structure where business decisions are made at the top of the hierarchy by senior management or at the head quarters of the business
decentralised structures def
Decen= when a business allows branches to take more controll/make their own deisicions

Consistent decision-making across the organization Clear chain of command and accountability Easier to implement company-wide policies
❌ Disadvantages:
Slower decision-making process Less flexibility and innovation Employees may feel less empowered
decentralised +/-
✅ Advantages:
Faster decision-making at local levels Encourages innovation and adaptability Employees feel more empowered and motivated
❌ Disadvantages:
Inconsistencies across departments or locations Potential lack of coordination Risk of poor decision-making at lower levels
