139 lean production Flashcards
what is lean production
a system that focuses on cutting out waste, whilst ensuring quality
waste=costs
explain kaizen- continuous development
kaizen groups ( a group of workers who have a shared role in part of the production process)
eg. may involve the designer of an component , workers from production lim and production managers
these groups meet regularly and discuss problems/improvements at a minimal cost
-efficient-less erros made-less waste
explain. just in time
- sure inputs into the business production process only arrive when needed d
- customers orders determine what is produced
- specialist soft wear is used to connect production/suppliers
(+)/(-) of JIT
(+) -lower stock holding-reduction in storage spaces-saves rent/costs
-stock is only availed when needed-> less working capital tied up in stock
(-) little room for mistakes
-production highly reliant on suppliers- if stock is not delivered on time- production delayed
-no spare finished product available to meet unexpected orders
-* need for complex, specialist stock systems*
explain cell production
- a from of team working where production processes are split into cells- each cell is responsible for a complete unit of work
- team members focus on specific tasks
- faster production due to reduced movement/ wait times
- cells can adapt quickly to changes in product design / demand
(+) of cell production
(+)
-closeness of cell members- improved communication
- workers become multiskilled and more adaptable to the needs of the business
-greater employee motivation - variety of work, team working, responsibility
(-) of cell production
(-)
- culture has to embrace trust/ participation or workers can feel they are being pushed for greater output
- business may have to invest in new materials handling and ordering systems suitable for cell production
explain time based management
focuses on reducing production times by streamlining processes and minimising delays
- completing tasks as quickly and efficiency as possible to reduce delays and improve productivity
importance of lean production to shareholders
(+) efficiency-higher profits-higher dividends
(-) in initial cost of implementing lean production methods may reduce dividends in the short term. if lean production methods fail eg.suppliers do not deliver on time-> productivity will fall//costs raise and the business will not make efficient use of time based management
eval importance of learn production to employees
(+) more motivated- being part of an efficient team may be rewarding , tasks varied, more responsibility- empowered/ productive - rewarded with bonuses
(-) new techniques or training in may be stressful
eval importance of lean production to customers
(+) benoit from shorter lead times- high customer satisfaction
(-) if there’s delays due to JIT systems- let down
eval importance of lean production to managers
(=0 motivated in brining new lean production methods, saves money and waste
(-) implementing new lean production techniques can be stressful is employees are resistant to change. if learn production techniques don’t work eg. unreliable supplier not delivering stock- affect productivity and motivation of workers and management profits
eval importance of lean production to suppliers
(+) may be able to charge higher prices of JIT deliveries- benifits from good relationship to supplier needed for successful lean production methods
(-) pressure on suppliers to deliver stock on time- contacts could be taken away if delivered are delivered to latte
eval importance of lean production to local communities
(+) JIT- less water. if business makes more profit though waste and cost savings there could be job opportunities in the future, or business could invest within the local community
