what’s is an appraisal
a regular meeting (once every 6 months or son an annual basis) in which the staff member’s performance is analysed, normally against performance targets
what is an superior assessment
involves the employee’s direct line manager completing an assessment of your performance.
the line manager has a good insight and overview of your performance as they work closely with you.
what is a self assessment
process of having the employee reflecting upon their own performance, recording their progress, and suggesting targets for the future
what is a peer assessment
refers to the process of having employees of similar levels of responsibility comment upon the performance of their co-workers
what is a 360 degree appraisal
involves style appraised staff member receiving feedback from people (named or anonymous) whose views are considered helpful or relevant, from people from different positions eg.workers, line manages, customers - provides a full picture of performance

employee fells invested in and valued so would he more motivated and productive , and they know what they need to do in order to do a good job , bonuses incentive work hard

they can get legal protection for business if they have employee disputes
evaluate impact of appraisals
- success of appraisals depends on acting upon staff problems which are highlighted- if problems are not followed up, and feedback is provided, demotivating can occur
- appraisals must be based on clear criteria (set, agreed and understood targets) and managers must be trained to solve problems that can arise as a result of any poor preformace indicated in appraisals
