what’s is an appraisal
a regular meeting (once every 6 months or son an annual basis) in which the staff member’s performance is analysed, normally against performance targets . new targets are set eg.peer
what is an superior assessment
workers performance is assessed by their line manager (immediate boss) who comes up with targets and trading needs
what is a self assessment
process of having the employee reflecting upon their own performance , and set their own targets and considers their own training needs
what is a peer assessment
refers to the process of having employees of similar levels of responsibility assessing performance of co workers
what is a 360 degree appraisal
worker’s performance is assessed and feedback is given by their line manage, colleagues, and sometimes customers- provides a full picture of performance
benifits of appraisals
- motivates and improves performance
- allows setting of achievable targets
- identifies training needs
- enables bonuses to be earned

- can cause tension in the workplace
- puts workers under tremendous pressure to keep improving preformace

they get better service and quality products from staff who had feedback and targets of their performance

supplier relationship can improve if staff have targets to , meet payment deadlines or improve relationships to get a better price

quality and productivity can improve leading to more output and better customer loyalty , so more able to meet targets and be successful

employee fells invested in and valued so would he more motivated and productive , and they know what they need to do in order to do a good job , bonuses incentive work hard

they can get legal protection for business if they have employee disputes
evaluate impact of appraisals
- success of appraisals depends on acting upon staff problems which are highlighted- if problems are not followed up, and feedback is provided, demotivating can occur
- appraisals must be based on clear criteria (set, agreed and understood targets) and managers must be trained to solve problems that can arise as a result of any poor preformace indicated in appraisals (expensive)
