136 production Flashcards
what does production depend on
- cost
- volume
- quality
- skill of workforce
what are the 3 types of production
- job production
- batch production
- flow of mass production
explain job production
- item is cutom made, one at at time, products are unique and to the buyers specification
- labour insensive, produced by skilled workers
(+) of job production
-results in high quality products that are matched to cutomer needs-justfying high prices
-prevents boredom-employees make something new everytime-higher motivation
- design is flexible and can be adapted to cutomer needs-business less vunerable to changes in taste as they are flexible-ready to adapt to customer wants
(-) of job production
- time consuming to make compared to goods made using mass production -> therefore making the business slower to get products to the market, whist competitors are already selling and establishing brand loyalty
- *prices higher-materials are more expensive-skilled workers command higher prices for their time and expertise *-> depending on levels of cmpetition/ price elasticity of demand for the product-could affect profitibility
what is batch production
- involves manufactoring a limited number of identical products
- at each stage of the production process work will be completed for the whole batch before the next stage is begun
(+) of batch production
- lower unit costs and higher output than job production- greater price flexibility
- faster- alot of it is made at once
- allows for a more diverse product portfolio- business oppotunity to target fast growing markets
(-) of batch production
- time is lost when machines have t be rest for new production- costing the business money and affecting the ability to meet orders
what is mass production
- incolves production process on production lines
- continous process-> product flows from one stage if production to the next- allowing identical products to be made in larage volumes
(+) of mass production
-faster than job/ batch production- shorter lead times keepig customers satsified and quicker entry to markets
- use of robotics- allow for greater quality products abd removal of human error-> helps reduce costs-less waste and allows business to charge higher prices
what will the type of production depend on
- the product being produced-> if theres a high demand mass production will be the best. if theres not a high demand/product persoanlisation then job production wil be suited
-ability of money for investment-> if lots of money-can invest in mechines- best for mass/batch, job production cheapest
-technlogy-> if business is producing a niche product-technology isn’t approprate
-skill of labour-> job prodcution is difficult without specialised workers to add value
