13 2a RBC Flashcards
Red blood cells (RBC’s) - Erythrocytes are and
} Composed of
of large molecule of haemoglobin
} Biconcave
haemoglobin
a complex protein - iron compound,
which binds with oxygen and carbon dioxide
Erythrocytes function
- Transport oxygen from lungs to the tissues
(oxyhaemoglobin). - Transport carbon-dioxide from tissues to lungs
(carboxyhaemoglobin) - Haemoglobin acts as a buffer and regulates the
hydrogen ion concentration (acid base balance) - Carry the blood group antigens and Rh factor
RCC: normal values
} adult males: 4.5-5.5 x 10 12/L
} adult females: 3.8-4.8 x 10 12/L
} Hb (haemoglobin) normal values
} adult males :130-170 g/L
} adult females: 120-150 g/L
A platelet count is an estimation
the number of
platelets per litre of blood.
The normal platelet count for adults is:
150-400 x 10 9/L
Primary function –platelet
aid blood clotting by assisting
haemostasis in injury by forming ‘plug’
platelet structure and life
No nucleus, so can’t divide; life span 9–12 days
platelet and storage
⅓ stored in spleen as a reserve
thrombocyte function
- Blood clotting
- Clot retraction
- Defence mechanism
- Homeostasis
- Repair and rupture of blood vessel
normal life blood cell
WBC’s – 2-3 days
} RBC’s - 120 days
} Platelets – 10 days
