Common Skin Disorders
- Acne
- Cold Sores (HSV)
- Hives (allergic reaction)
- Rosacea (flushing, redness, dry skin, red bumps)
- Eczema (dry scaly patches on skin)
- Psoriasis
Types of Infections
Bacterial
Viral
Fungal
Bacterial
Impetigo
• Folliculitis, furuncles and carbuncles
Viral
- Herpes zoster
* Herpes simplex: orolabial, genital
Fungal
- tinea pedis (feet)
- tinea coporis (ringworm)
- tinea capitis (head)
- tinea cruris (genitals)
- tinea unguium (nails)
Impetigo
is a superficial infection of the skin caused
by staphylococci, streptococci or multiple bacteria.
Bullous impetigo
is a more deep-seated infection of
the skin caused by Staphlococcus aureus, and is
characterised by the formation of bullae (i.e. large,
fluid-filled blisters). The bullae rupture, leaving raw,
red areas.
Folliculitis
Folliculitis is an infection of bacterial or fungal
origin that arises within the hair follicles. Folliculitis
commonly affects the beard area of men who
shave.
Furuncles
boils – acute
inflammation
Carbuncles
Carbuncles (abscess of skin in
subcutaneous tissue).
Impetigo is contagious and
and may spread to other parts of patient’s body
or to other persons, therefore cleanliness and good hygiene practices
help prevent the spread of the lesions from one skin area to another and
from one person to another.
Nursing Management / Education impetigo
• Each person should have a separate towel and washcloth. Don’t share
towels, combs, etc.
• Infected people should avoid contact with other people until the lesions
heal.
• Patient teaching regarding antibiotics, hygiene and skin and lesion care
• Bathe daily with antibacterial soap
• Furuncles, boils or pimples should never be squeezed.
Herpes Zoster
An infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV)
(both chickenpox – varicella and herpes zoster ) shingles
are indistinguishable.
• The disease is characterised by a painful vesicular
eruption along the area of distribution of the sensory
nerves from one or more posterior ganglia.
After a case of chickenpox runs its course, the VZV
responsible for the outbreak lies dormant inside nerve
cells near the brain and spinal cord.
• It is thought that during the ageing process, natural
immunity to the varicella wanes, allowing the virus to
reactivate and maintaining it in the population.
Herpes Simplex types
Type 1 = Mouth ( cold sores)
Type 2 = Genital area
